If I’m honest, rugs don’t usually stick around for too long in our house…I’m a little addicted to change when it comes to the area rugs we place in our home, and, happily, it’s really easy to sell our old rugs to other homes in this area thanks to Facebook Marketplace. So, if you really think about, my change-over habit costs next to nothing! I wish I was addicted to swapping out throw pillows because that would be far, far easier than changing rugs (we generally move all of the furniture off a rug to swap it out, which, in the case of a bedroom or living room, is no easy feat), but I am who I am and don’t plan on changing any time soon.

In case you’re on the hunt for a new rug in your own home, I thought I’d share some of our recent favorites—all of which happen to come from Loloi, my favorite area rugs resource. I’ve been working with this brand for the better part of a decade through my blog, and have never been let down. Not once! Their designs are top notch, and allow me to get the look of a vintage rug without the hefty price tag. This blog post isn’t sponsored, by the way. I’m just genuinely that big of a fan, and I’ve lately had lots of friends, family members, and blog followers reach out for recommendations. Today’s blog post is my way of rounding up those favorite picks in one place, including my honest reviews for each rug mentioned.

First up is the one you see pictured above in our sunroom. It’s the Loloi Margot Area Rug in Terracotta/Lagoon, and we have it in the 8′-6″ x 11′-6″ size. We’ve had others from the Margot collection, and I can say without hesitation that these are the softest rugs on earth. The ultra plush texture feels like a chenille blanket between your fingers, and practically begs you to sit right down on it to play a card game or to lounge on with a pillow during movie night. I love how the cool tones of this Terracotta/Lagoon colorway pick up on the blue velvet fabric of our sectional sofa, and rust tones work oh so well with our leather couch. The room looks like it was designed around this rug, but it was actually the last element I incorporated into the space. Must just be lucky!

This is going to sound silly, but if I were a rug, I would be the Wynter Printed WYN-02 Auburn Area Rug from Loloi. The earthy color palette is my dream come true, and I feel like the printed design is one of Loloi’s most successful vintage-inspired patterns to date. It looks very authentically aged, yet the flat printed design means that it’s super easy to vacuum and steam clean (a must in our 3-pet household). It’s generally really affordable, too. We used to have an oversized version of this Wynter rug in our sunroom before we changed out to the Margot design that I mentioned above, and I missed it so much that I got a smaller size to go in our kitchen snug. I love how it has rust tones that speak to our leather couch upholstery, and cool blue/green colors that complement our aqua-painted walls.

Our guest room has gone through many a rug over the course of the two years that we’ve lived here. I think I’m struggling to settle on a design that works well with the original 1960s botanical wallpaper that was already existing in this space. I don’t have any plans to change the wallpaper any time soon, so any room design that I come up with (including a rug) has to work with the wallpaper.

For some reason, I’m having a harder time with that than I expected! I think it has to do with pattern mixing. I need to find a rug design that works with the super tiny print of the wallpaper without competing with it. I’ve tried lots of rug designs (maybe four or five all told), but this current Amber Lewis x Loloi Cali Ivory / Tobacco Area Rug rug is, by far, my favorite. I think it’s because the minimalist stripe pattern is larger scale than the botanical motif in the wallpaper so it doesn’t feel too busy alongside it, but it also sports the same color palette, so it coordinates well, too. I think it’s a match made in heaven.

Finally, I want to spend some time gushing over the Loloi Chris Loves Julia Ida IDA-05 Spa/Sunrise rug in our primary bedroom. It’s really soft underfoot, and I love how the tasseled edges give it an upscale feel without the high end price tag. It’s made of easy-to-clean polyester certified by OEKO-TEX, which, again, I appreciate because our pets drag all sorts of things around on their paws, and it doesn’t shed at all when vacuumed. The pile is super low, making it one of the easiest rugs to keep clean in our home. The soft minty blue/green color palette is also just so soothing, I think it makes our primary bedroom look like a hotel room.

I hope this roundup was helpful for those of you on the hunt for a new rug upgrade! If you’d like more recommendations, make sure you revisit my past rug-focused roundup here. I could go on and on about rugs in our home, so if you need a really specific recommendation, just leave a comment below or send me a private message. Whether you’re looking for a pet/kid-friendly option, something really affordable, or a rug that feels extra luxurious under-foot, chances are good that I’ve got a pick to share with you.

How To Level Up A Plain Evergreen Wreath

How To Level Up A Plain Evergreen Wreath

One of my favorite annual traditions during the fall/winter season is decorating a plain evergreen wreath. It’s my way of kicking off the holidays (I do this the week of Thanksgiving, by the way), and I try to design something that I can leave up all winter long. To start, I pick out a handmade wreath from our favorite family-owned Christmas tree farm and then I add all sorts of pretty elements to give the plain wreath a bit more color and dimension. We no longer get a live Christmas tree, but I still want to be able to support the local tree farm that we always go to. Purchasing one of the live evergreen wreathes that they sell in their barn at the tree farm is my way of doing that. Plus, I really love the challenge of making the wreathes look festive in creative new ways each year.

You can see what the wreath looked like before in the photos above. They’re always so beautifully lush and fluffy, which makes the next phase so much easier—it’s super helpful to have a good base to work with. This year, I decided to buy a couple of live cut branches from Trader Joe’s to use for my wreath accents. They aren’t expensive (I spent less that $10 for the two bunches you see pictured), and it means that I don’t have to go out foraging in the cold. If you remember last year’s wreath design, I used cuttings from our yard instead of purchasing anything new from the store, and it worked really well, but it did require more work. That’s why I opted to buy my accent branches from the grocery store this year—it was a little less hassle and allowed me to avoid foraging in the cold.

Another new thing I did this year was I incorporated wire to attach the accents to my wreath form. In the past, I skipped this step because it seemed a little tedious, but because I didn’t use wire, some of the branches I tucked freestyle into the wreath fell out over the course of the season while it hung on our front door. This year I thought I’d give wire a try for a more permanent application, and it worked like a charm. It is more tedious—no doubt about that—but the wire means that our wreath will stay together long into the winter, which is always the goal.

The process might not really need any explanation, but in case you want all the details, I cut a bunch of wire to individual 8-inch lengths, pre-cut the branch accents into smaller bits that I could scatter across the face of the wreath, and then I used the cut wire pieces to attach each cut branch accent to the wreath form one by one. I wrapped my wire all the way around the wreath to attach the accent to the face of the wreath exactly where I wanted it, and then twisted the ends of the wire together at the back to tighten things up. Since I used green-colored floral wire, the pieces are pretty much invisible. I finished off the wreath with a droopy silk bow, which was also attached to the wreath using wire.

I think it turned out so lovely, and I’m super impressed by the dimension those two inexpensive bundles of Trader Joe’s branches added. The bow also really adds so much style and sophistication to the wreath, I think. I gifted this one to my mom, and she hung it on her garage door after I finished decorating it. The white berries did eventually die in the open air since they weren’t in water, but they turned an earthy red/brown color that looks almost intentional, so we’ve left them in place. If you want to avoid that, though, just use leafy accents that will naturally dry out over the course of the season. The eucalyptus I used looks exactly the same today as the day I bought it!

Comment and let me know what you think. Would you have decorated the plain wreath, or would you have left it simple and minimal with just its evergreen branches on display? If you would add to it and have other ideas for accents, please tell us all about them! I’d love to hear your creative take on this simple seasonal craft, and may just have to try one of your suggestions on our own wreath next winter season.
