Well, I think I’ve finally turned a corner when it comes to decorating our new house (By the way, can I still call it a “new” house if we’ve been here for six months? Comment and let me know). Yes, I’m still struggling my way through the process because this more formal style architecture has been confounding me, but I’m starting to feel my confidence come back tiny bit by tiny bit. I think the actual turning point was when I came home from vacation last month. Stepping into the house after having had a week away, I was able to view the rooms with fresh eyes, and I could admit just how monumentally far they’ve come in these six short months.

That said, there’s still plenty to do! I’ve started thinking more critically about the paint colors I impulsively chose at the beginning, I noticed furniture that could be better suited in totally different areas of the house, and I’ve also picked up on things like rugs that aren’t the right colors for our new whole home color palette or that are just not the right size in general. Today, I thought I’d talk a little more in depth about the latter issue—dealing with the incorrect size rug for your space.

When we first moved into the house, I laid down a rug in our formal front living room that we already had. The rug was on the bigger size in terms of what we had in our rug inventory, and I thought the colors would look nice with our existing furniture. We lived with the room as you see it pictured above for a good long while, but it did eventually dawn on me that we were selling this expansive room short by trying to make do with such a small rug.

Yes, the sofa and coffee table fit on the rug, but only a couple of the legs on the ottoman for our leather lounge chair could stretch over onto the rug, and our white swivel chair was miles away from touching the rug. The small rug was making this large room look a little empty and disjointed. The proportions were off, and ultimately gave our living room an “unfinished” vibe.

Six months later, it was time to get this sorted out! I’ve been a huge fan of Revival for years. We’ve had the pleasure of enjoying two of their one-of-a-kind vintage rugs in our day-to-day lives (seen here and here), played around with their new washable rugs, and even tested out pieces from their tabletop collection, which we still use every single day more than two years later. I trust this brand implicitly, and really appreciate that their pricing is meant to suit more realistic budgets. Even their largest size rugs are affordable, and they’ve worked really hard as a team to make that happen.

For our new-to-us living room, we ultimately chose the Tschudi rug from Revival, in the 10′ x 14′ size. For comparison, our old rug was a 7’9″ x 9’9″ rectangle. I love how our new Tschudi rug stretches to fill the space entirely. The couch, coffee table, lounge chair plus ottoman, and even the swivel chair by the fireplace all easily fit on the rug, and yet the soft neutral taupe color of the pile doesn’t overwhelm the space.

This rug is actually all one solid color, but the thick cut-pile design that’s essentially carved into the wool creates this really cool shadowed effect that catches the eye in just the right way. In other words, the design is cleverly tone-on-tone. It’s a focal point, for sure, but the solid color scheme helps this oversized rug feel more subtle and subdued when viewed alongside all of the other important decorative elements in the space.

All this to say…Have you asked yourself lately if your rugs are the right size? It’s time to get critical! I don’t generally put much stock in interior design “rules,” but rug size is one exception for me. Laying down a rug that’s too small or that doesn’t suit the shape or flow of a room can really have a huge impact on the way the entire space is perceived and lived in.

If you want my advice, go as big as you can afford in order to maximize the look and feel of your room. If the room is just too big for your rug budget, try getting an inexpensive solid color jute rug, and layer a smaller, more eye-catching patterned rug on top in the center. This is a great way to cheat the system.

But I still also swear by the affordability of the rugs in general at Revival. The massive (handmade!) 10′ x 14′ area rug we now have in our living room cost under $1,000, and there’s plenty of other budget-friendly options to choose from on their website. Did I mention that our wool Tschudi rug is also washable?! Yeah, there’s so much to love about it. Walmart Home Finds You’ll Truly Love

Walmart Home Finds You'll Truly Love

Because of my work with Better Homes and Gardens this year, I’ve had the chance to try out a whole bunch of cool home accents from their line at Walmart. I’m continually impressed with just about everything I’ve used from the collection, so I thought it was time that I share my top picks with you. If you’re on a fairly tight décor budget (like I am), but also love high end design looks (also like me!), then this roundup of Walmart home finds is for you.

Walmart Décor You’ll Truly Love:

1. Outdoor Rocking Chair Set: We put this set on our front porch, and absolutely love it. The chairs are enormous! My dog and I can both fit together on one chair, and we put that setup to the test pretty often on sunny afternoons—with a good book to round things out. I love the soft blue color of the fabric, too. It pops nicely against our red brick home.

2. Touch-Activated Table Lamp: This lamp rocks. It’s probably my favorite new (as opposed to vintage) lamp that I’ve ever set up in our house. I love the mid-century style look, but the touch-activated base has to be the best part. We keep it in our entryway so we can tap it to life when we walk through the front door. It’s so easy to do, even with arms laden down with shopping bags.

3. Woven Tray: I’m a firm believer in the immense power of trays to make a cluttered surface look suddenly organized. Use this one on a coffee table, as a centerpiece on your dining table (it works for outdoor dining, too), or to corral perfumes and a candle on your dresser.

4. Indoor/Outdoor Steel Console: I wrote a whole post last month on three totally unique ways to style this steel console if you want inspiration. Find that info (with tons of photos) here.

5. Super Soft Area Rug: I swear this is the softest rug we’ve ever had in our home, and that’s saying something when you consider how many rugs we’ve experimented with in the past. We laid the runner version down in our hallway, and I relish the moments when I get to walk across it.

6. Ceramic Serving Bowl: This ceramic bowl looks so handmade, it’s crazy! I gifted it to my mom and she uses it as a fruit bowl, but it would also work well for serving salad or pasta. There’s just something so organic and lovely about the loopy design around the rim.

7. Framed Art Canvas: I am very, very picky when it comes to art, and I love this print. It looks very high end, and I really appreciate the unique dark frame. You see white frames and light wood frames all the time, but dark ones aren’t quite as prevalent, so it feels very special. Note that this is a dark stained wood frame—it’s not black.

8. Ceiling Fan With Reversible Blades: We have this fan in practically every room in our house. They’re easy to install, and I appreciate that the blades are reversible in case we ever feel like changing up the look. They work great, too—very quiet, and they keep us comfortably cool on hot days.

9. Gardening Pot Set: My indoor plants look so happy in their new ceramic planters. These pots are such a great price, too. I hope they don’t sell out before you can get your hands on them.

10. Wood And Marble Side Table: I’ve definitely contemplated ordering multiples of this table. Again, it looks expensive, but is very affordable. I appreciate the heavy weight of it so I know my cat can’t knock it over while jumping from surface to surface.

11. Modern Ceiling Light Fixture: We installed this light in our hallway a little while ago, and are more than happy with it. The mod shape is perfect for our 1960s home. I think I might install a second one in our kitchen makeover (reveal coming later this month).

12. Textured Sculptural Pot: I can’t believe this trendy, cool planter pot is from Walmart! And the price is unbeatable.

Which pieces caught your eye from that list? If you told me I could only pick one favorite thing, it would have to be that table lamp. Or maybe the ceiling fan…I don’t know! It’s so hard to choose because I genuinely would rebuy anything and everything on this list. Let me know in the comments if there are specific accent roundups that you’d like to see here on the blog (doesn’t have to be Walmart-themed), and I’ll make sure to get it scheduled in my editorial calendar.
