Most things in our home have fallen into place after a little trial and error, but one spot that has repeatedly confounded me was this one awkward corner in our sunroom. You may remember that we styled the corner as a cafe-inspired dining area when we first moved in, with a small round table and chairs. I thought it might be a nice place for us to sit and eat lunch or dinner occasionally, and we did that a few times, but not nearly enough to justify keeping the setup as it was. The space was just a little too tight for the table and chairs, so we ultimately didn’t gravitate toward it.
After two years of leaving “well enough” alone, I decided to really hone in on what I wanted to get out of this spot in our home. If not a dining space, what kind of furniture could we put there? A lone chair seemed redundant with the conversation seating area already established on the other side of the room, but what if I put a chair and ottoman in the corner plus functional shelving to create more of a singular arrangement that could stand on its own? That thought process is exactly how I came up with the idea for a meditation book nook.
By combining a bookshelf (one of my secondhand finds that I repainted for this occasion), a small black side table, and the Aria Leather Chair & Ottoman from Finn & Form, I was able to give this corner a defined personality. Instead of a sort of “floating” chair without real purpose, the lounger acts as its own stand-alone piece in the room.
I love how the dark black pure Nappa 11000 leather grounds the corner visually, and it feels so good to sink into, of course, too. I was able to keep the same round rug from the old dining setup here in the corner, and think it actually suits the size of the new chair much better than it did the old table and chairs. A squiggle floor lamp and earth-toned art from my existing collection finished off the look nicely.
One of my favorite parts is how the walnut wood foundation that surrounds the base of the chair and ottoman are practically the perfect match to our flooring and the vintage stained wood credenza off to the side. I opted to paint the wood bookshelf a light creamy white color so that it didn’t compete with the wood grain on the chair and credenza, and then I styled it as a combination bar cart and bookshelf.
I’ve already sat in this corner so much more often than I used to at the old dining set, so I know this was the right call. I love sinking into the chair and putting my feet up with a good book and glass of wine, or to do my daily meditations first thing in the morning. It’s true what they say that sometimes you just have to live in a space and get to know the way you use it day to day before you come up with the right design. Happily, I think we finally nailed it.
What do you think? Leave a comment and let me know, then hop over to the Finn & Form website to pick out your own mid-century inspired lounge chair (here’s another one from my wish list).
