Happy New Year! I hope you had a lovely holiday and that you were able to spend it with all of your favorite people in your very favorite places! I’m excited to kick off 2025 with a brand new room makeover story focused in my tiny square home office. If you’ve been following along for a while, then you know this room has gone through a lot of changes in the past two years. We removed the old wallpaper and I painted the room white. Then, I repainted the room a rosy terracotta color, stopping the paint about 18 inches from the ceiling to give the room a bit of dimension and interest. This time, I wanted to take that design concept one step further with a wallpapered border accent, and I figured it was a good time to try out a new paint color for fun while I was at it. Keep scrolling to see how it all came together.
Those photos above are a reminder of the soft pink paint color that I had on the walls for the past year. I liked it, but I think it was just one of those colors that loses its charm after so long. I was ready for a change. I did also feel like the pinky/beige paint sort of clashed with the beautiful tan custom area rug that I aded to the room earlier this year that I had no intention of changing out anytime soon. Like I said, it was simply time to mix things up, and I decided to turn to one of my favorite tried and true paint colors as a starting point for the makeover: “Halcyon Green” from Sherwin-Williams.
I’ve used “Halcyon Green” in all three of the houses John and I have lived in together (and over at parents’ new house, too!). It’s such a great soft teal blue/green color, with the perfect amount of desaturated richness. The plan, then, was to repaint the lower 3/4 of the room in “Halcyon Green,” and then I would cover the blank top 1/4 of the room with new patterned peel-and-stick wallpaper from Fancy Walls. I thought this “Minimalist Plants” wallpaper would make the two-toned effect look more intentional, and I wanted to bring even more attention to this design accent by installing a vintage-inspired trim piece where the paint met the wallpaper.
I hung the wallpaper sample up on the wall in my office along with a paint chip of the new paint color for a week or two, and ultimately gave the combination a resounding “Yes!” So, I placed my order for the full run of wallpaper and decorative trim, and then I hopped over to the hardware store to get my gallon of new paint.
I started by measuring the room and cutting the trim pieces to size on my miter saw, then I painted them to match the would-be new color of the walls. I nailed the trim in place once the paint had dried, caulked the seams and nail holes to make them disappear, and finally painted the rest of the room its new “Halcyon Green” color with the help of my dad since I was still pretty sick at this point. The final touch? Hanging new wallpaper, of course! This was actually the easiest part of the entire room makeover, and I had it done in under an hour using my favorite trusty wallpaper smoothing tool and a fresh razor blade.
It feels like my home office has been through quite a few makeovers since we moved here in 2022, but this is easily my favorite look in its evolution. I think the blue/green paint color makes my wood furniture pop, and the wallpaper and trim combination at the top of the room gives the space a British cottage vibe that I’m really loving at the moment. The whole space looks so sweet to me, and it seems to fit the age of the house better now. I’m even considering adding crown moulding at the very tippy top of the room to mimic the look of nearly all of the other rooms in our 1960s ranch. That would be the cherry on top of this makeover, don’t you think? Let me know what you think in the comments!
