You know those projects that you see on Pinterest that seem totally, completely overwhelming? You’ve probably pinned said project multiple times (despite the warning that you’ve already saved it before), and have even dreamed and schemed about where you’d actually put it in your home.
For me, that project has always been a built-in stone fire pit. I remember my dad building a big old bonfire every season growing up, and how much fun it was to traipse outside in boots and PJs to sit around the flames, skewered hot dog or marshmallow in hand. But the idea of actually building a pit now that we have a house and backyard of our own just seemed like too much work.
Happily, my editor at eHow provided me with the inspiration and motivation I needed to get this DIY project crossed off of my to-do list, and I can safely say that I should have done it ages ago. Building your own fire pit might sound like a big deal, but it really just takes some careful planning and no more than two hours of hands-on time. No, really! Less than two hours.
For the entire breakdown of steps, one piece at a time, click over to eHow, but I wanted to share just a couple of candid thoughts with you guys right here in case you’ve been putting this type of project off, too. Although you’ll need to spend some good quality time with a pad of paper and a pencil, jotting down measurements and scheduling trips to the hardware store, the project is a simple and straightforward one to actually complete. John and I made several trips to the store to make sure that we had everything that we needed (a hassle you can skip since I list all of the supplies you’ll need over on eHow), and it actually came in under budget, too.
Now we have the fire pit of our dreams, and just in time for the mild spring season to come. I’m really looking forward to kicking back in our backyard (the first one I’ve ever had as an adult) with some smores and friends and family.
Have you ever built a flagstone fire pit before? Was it easier than you were expecting, too? Or do you have a different project that’s been lingering on your to-do list? I’m hopeful that this tiny tale is enough motivation for you to kick your crafting into high gear and get it done, once and for all. I believe in you!

I really wish at least one of the eHow links would go directly to the tutorial.
Sorry! There was a delay with publication of the feature, but I should have the links updated by the end of the day.
Random question, but where did you get those great chairs? Our home actually came with a fire pit, and we were using janky folding chairs all summer.
They were actually lucky thrift store finds!! I’m glad you like them =)
Where did you get the angled stones from? Looking to replicate but can’t find anything suitable. Thanks
We got ours at Lowes!
Wow I love this, a great way to spend an autumn evening.
Thanks!
