Pinspiration Monday: Battery storage

I don’t know about ya’ll, but until recently I was in the midst of a huge battle with my batteries. Whenever I needed a fresh one, it seemed that every one I grabbed was dead or dying. I couldn’t understand why this was happening until I took a good, long, hard look at my then-current manner of storing these little tubes of metal.

While I had, at the very least, found a way to keep them TOGETHER in one place stored in a gallon-sized ziplock bag, the jumbled pile of batteries meant that ends were touching and inevitably charging each other out.

As usual, Pinterest came to the rescue with this idea of storing batteries upright in a craft storage box:

Source: Better Homes and Gardens

The multiple compartments meant that my OCD mind could be settled with organized batteries by type/size, and the ends would no longer be a-bumpin’.

So off to Wal Mart we went, after which I came home with this little $4 beauty:

My favorite part is the customization feature – See those extra “Z”s of plastic in the big compartment to the right? Those can be cut down to a pile of extra plastic “walls” to slide in as partitions, allowing you to make special boxed areas based on the size of your materials to be stored.

The little tabs holding the “Z”s together could easily be twisted and snapped off, although they sometimes left little jagged edges. But that was nothing a snip or two with a pair of scissors couldn’t fix.

In my batteries went! I know that you other obsessed-with-organization people can understand the feeling of sheer joy and euphoria that comes with compartmentalized objects in their own cubbies…It was (and is) a-w-e-s-o-m-e.

Although my particular box wasn’t tall enough to house the batteries upright like the one in my Pinspiration image, they store just fine horizontally. To state the obvious, big batteries got their own larger room on the right side of the box, whereas the little dudes got progressively smaller rooms to the left.

As you can see, I had a few extra partitions left over so I’ll be able to section things even further once my dwindling battery collection is replenished.

I love my new battery storage and think that I can finally call myself victorious in this battle. Never thought I’d EVER say this, but now I can’t wait until I see a blinking light telling me I need a new battery.

How do you guys store your batteries? Got any other witty “new uses for old things” tricks up your sleeve? Gotta love Pinterest…

My new Fujifilm Instax 210

I’ve got another electronics review for you today! I am the proud new owner of a Fujifilm Instax 210 camera – For those of you not familiar, this is the modern-day version of a Polaroid camera. It spits out instant photos, all with that delightful characteristic white frame and vintage flair in the colors.

This purchase was made possible with Amazon points I had saved up from my credit card and also through the generous donation of a $50 gift card from “One Project Closer” when our bathroom redo was featured on their blog. I knew that I wanted to use this money for something useful around the house or for a project – The camera was my way of combining both goals. I’ll be able to document the house with unique photos from the Instax, and I’m also brainstorming a fun project with more artsy Instax photos.

I ended up going with this listing since it was a bundle deal, including 100 exposures of the special Instax film. It came to $146.80, which is a pretty great price, but I was able to knock it down to about $70 with the gift card and credit points. Not too bad!

You can imagine my giddiness when this box arrived at the door:

I gleefully sliced through the tape!!! Only to find another taped box…

Ten seconds later, we were in business. Is there anything better than seeing your latest big purchase all shiny and new in its box???

Once I finally got the camera out of the box, I had to sit back for a moment and visually digest it all. Maybe the photo below doesn’t give my reaction justice…Scroll down.

Now with something to compare it to (i.e. my standard tiny, thin digital point-and-shoot) can you see what threw me for a loop?

IT’S HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It instantly took me back to when I was about 10 years old and got my very own first camera. It was black like my new Instax and pretty much the same size (although I wonder if it was even a bit thinner way back in the 90′s now that I think of it). Like me, if you ever decide to purchase one of these cameras, you’ll get over the behemoth size in no time. Especially when you start to take pictures – Which is exactly what I did in a matter of moments after opening the box. Here’s the film specs from the package, in case you’re curious:

And the film package, complete with handy little drawings and instructions:

I was SOOOOO excited to take my first photo. You can probably tell from the photo below, which is literally me taking a picture of my new camera with its VERY FIRST exposure sticking out of the top!!! I gingerly removed the brand new photo from the slot on top of the camera and laid it on the counter…

…then I stared at it for about 30 seconds in confusion. This doesn’t look like my vision of beautiful vintage-looking Polaroid-like photos!!!

Then I realized that I was looking at what must be the cover on the film – Not a photo at all. Just a piece of plastic. Deep breath later, I went back to get my shot again and was delighted to see a glossy picture roll out of the top of the camera.

It was definitely kind of neat to watch the image slowly come to life in color. SO neat in fact, that I took incremental photos of the picture until it was all in :)

All done! And yes, I took a picture of our tomato plant with the sky in the background. Believe it or not, this was pretty much the only good photo from the first batch of five that I took that afternoon…

Here’s one of our plate wall:

And our record player (although I would never believe it unless I had taken it myself, it’s so blurry…)

A little side table arrangement:

And my kitty cat:

Lots of pretty colors and definitely a vintage vibe, but I think we can all agree that I’ve got a while before I master this new camera…If you haven’t picked up from my blog posts, I tend to photograph super close to my subjects – Apparently Mr. Instax isn’t a fan of the close-up. Nor is he a fan of indoors in general – Things are a little too dark for him to focus correctly.

Hopefully I’ll get the hang of it soon and can show you some actual post-worthy Polaroids. Despite the initial trouble, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone loving the look of instant film – It’s pretty easy to use and, unlike a lot of modern Polaroid cameras and film, the Instax is pretty affordable.

Anybody else have experience with the Instax? I think our wedding photographer uses an Instax…Maybe I’ll chat her up about it during out engagement session in November :)

P.S. In case you were wondering, I’m not reviewing this product for compensation, just for your general FYI :)

Giving In to the Kindle Sensation…

Not sure if you guys are Twitter followers (if not, be sure to click here and “follow” my random quips throughout the day), but I recently Tweeted about ordering myself a new Kindle

For YEARS I have been on the I-hate-digital-readers-because-real-books-with-old-book-smells-and-real-pages-are-so-much-better bandwagon. But for WHATEVER reason, these two recent commercials pulled me over to the “dark side”:

Those two are so funny…Emmy nominees for sure ;) But really! They make me chuckle every time.

So I ended up on the Amazon site and, after reading the pros and cons of different models, I ended up ordering the white 3G with Wi-Fi Kindle. I decided on this slightly-more-expensive version because you can download books even if you don’t have access to or the password for the nearest wireless internet connection. I imagined myself on a train to New York City or lounging on a towel at the beach (two things I do allllllll the time ::sarcasm:: ) in desperate need to download the next book in a trilogy. The practicality of being able to download books instantly was one of the main reasons I wanted a digital reader in the first place, so being able to download even WITHOUT in-range wireless internet seemed like a no-brainer. Plus, there aren’t any contracts or monthly/yearly fees for the 3G network – It’s yours when you buy the device.

It came with free 2-day shipping, so two days later I had my brand new Kindle in hand! All of that pretentious loyalty to real books was forgotten in my excitement over holding this little gadget in hand…

(The above image is a dramatization. My thumb nail is NOT that manicured and that’s not the newest generation Kindle I bought – Also, I don’t tend to go for Einstein-based literature…Apparently this is a TERRIBLE dramatization, but isn’t that kind of always the way?)

So what on EARTH made me decide to change my mind?? Well moving actually! As you saw here, I’m a hoarder of books. I l-o-v-e to read and adore the smell of their pages (still do – having this new Kindle will NEVER replace the warm/fuzzy feeling I get from a real book), but they kind of add up fast in terms of storage. I have three book shelves, but they are already full to bursting. I needed to either stop collecting or get a library card, but realistically I know that neither of those things will COMPLETELY work for my reading habits.

So, to stem the flow of my book hoarding, I bought a Kindle. It was all in the name of storage, organization and pretty bookshelves (did I mention that a Kindle can hold 3,500 books??!)…In my opinion, bookshelves are NOT pretty when stuffed to the brim with novels. As you can see in the photo above, I like to throw a few non-book accessories in there too, but they were getting the boot because of my growing collection.

I was hoping my new Kindle would also be “in the name of money” as well, but it’s really not much of a cost savings…The downloadable books (at least the best-sellers or new releases I’m drawn to) are not much cheaper than real books, if at all. But apparently Amazon DOES offer a bunch of free or $1 books to choose from – I just haven’t gotten to that yet.

Since receiving my Kindle in the mail last Thursday, I have already started and finished one book (“Something Blue” by Emily Giffin in case you’re wondering) and begun a new one (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” by Stieg Larsson and Reg Keeland) – In short, I LOVE my Kindle. With one click, Amazon sends new books to my device and it literally DOES only take seconds to get there!

It was a bit of an adjustment to get used to the lack of page turning (you just push a button to go to the next page) and to not see the page numbers (instead there’s a bar at the bottom of the screen that tells you at what percentage you are – i.e. 2% through the book or 98%), but getting lost in a good book is no different whether you’re reading it on a screen or flipping pages in a bound novel. While I will NEVER give real books up for good, I will readily admit that digital readers are really just as convenient as they say they are.

But one of the big drawbacks I wanted to mention today is that a Kindle is delicate – Unlike old paperbacks that I used to toss into my purse without a second thought, I have to be mindful of the soft Kindle screen in transport. I thought about buying an official Kindle case off of Amazon, but a lot of them start at $50…Not in my price range.

Luckily, Etsy came to the rescue yet again…

There are multiple Etsy sellers who sew up adorable padded cases for Kindles. Oddly enough, I found a BUNCH that matched other fabrics in our house!

Here’s one that matches the fabric art in the studio:

And these options that match the pillows in the living room:

Oh and here’s one to go with yesterday’s post all about ikat:

But I finally decided on this one…

This little beauty comes from Etsy seller, fernfiddlehead – Definitely do yourself a favor if you have a Nook, Kindle, iPad, etc. and check our her site for all sorts of beautiful cases!

What pushed me over the edge on this one was the soft colors and sketchy quality of the pattern – Plus it has birds on it so you know I love it :)

I also appreciate the attention to detail that the seller obviously puts into her pieces. Each case is lined with a coordinating fabric and has a zipper closure keeping all devises safe from crumbs, etc. The case is also reenforced with soft cotton and bonded poly foam for extra protection while jostling around in a purse or bag.

Gotta love something that’s practical AND gorgeous – Plus, it’s half the cost of the ones from Amazon! I can’t wait for my new case to arrive in the mail…

So in short, I highly recommend a Kindle if you are an avid on-the-go reader with the need for something small, portable and easy to use/figure out. I’m not a big techie person but I could figure this gadget out – And that’s saying a lot.

Happy reading!
