Behind the Scenes: My BHG photoshoot

Now, as much as I WANT to, I’m not going to give away all of the details today. My full run down of the day, complete with anecdotes and virtual breathless excitement will all be documented later on, a la this column. But I couldn’t wait to share just a tiny peek into how the day went and just how thankful I am that this moment happened in the first place.

BHG sneak peek

I was surprisingly calm the morning of the photo shoot. It may have helped that I had kicked John out of the house for the day (which he was all too happy to go along with). You know how it can be exceptionally nerve-wracking having your family in the audience? Well that’s how I felt, so it was just me, the dog and the cats roaming around the house that day until the crew arrived.

Speaking of “the crew,” it consisted of a stylist from L.A., Char Hatch Langos, and NY/NJ photographer, John Bessler (plus John’s nephew as assistant). Each was incredibly talented in what they did, both in making the shoot a success, and in helping me to remain cool, calm and collected.

I haven’t said much about WHAT they were actually photographing though, so here’s a rather big hint…

photo

Even though my girlish ankles can be seen perched on that piece of furniture above, the REAL star of the show is our thrifted and refinished dresser. I’m so excited to share this piece with the readers of Better Homes and Gardens, and am so indescribably honored that they chose me and one of my DIYed projects to feature.

This is the stuff of dreams, folks…

More to come soon!!

The Options: White or Bright?

First of all, I wanted to thank all of you for your participation in my Reader Feedback Survey 2013!! Apparently more of you than I thought get the same satisfaction out of surveys that I do. At any rate, I really appreciate the honest feedback (and the sweet comments!). The results have given me a lot to think about and changes are on the way, the implementation of which starts today.

Reader Feedback Graphic

This morning, we move beyond “One Word.” With hardly a vote in its favor, I’ve got to succumb to the fact that it’s just not valuable to your creativity – And THAT is something I won’t compromise on. So, onward and upward as they say! Don’t think it’s gone forever though…I’m sure it’ll crop up every now and then when I’m feeling particularly inspired by a certain catchword.

So what’s the new plan? Well one thing that ALSO garnered some noticeable tabulation in the survey (this time in the affirmative) was interior design. Thursday’s “All in the details…” feature is meant to be a home design tip jar of sorts, but how about making it a little more interactive?

After giving it some thought, I came up with “The Options.” You’ll get two sometimes opposing, sometimes complementary styling options to choose from – Both will be explained for you and tips will abound, but my ultimate hope for this feature is that you all will weigh in and help each other. Have you tried this at home? Which of the two options are you most drawn to? In the end, you should be able to walk away with two simple, affordable interior design options in your back pocket.

First on the docket? Which is your go-to wall color of choice – White? Or bright?

White or Bright

Option 1: The Design Files | Option 2: Sadie + Stella

Option 1: As I’ve slowly come to realize, white walls are a fabulous way to spotlight colorful accessories. A great option for renters, white walls allow for a LOT more versatility since you don’t need to stress over rollers, trays, brushes and gallons of new paint when you want to change things. If you want to mix up the look of a space that sports white walls, all you have to do is rotate things like pillows, lamps, rugs and linens.

Option 2: But if you’re a die-hard color lover, you can’t stop at just the linens, rugs and lamps. From rich peacock teals, to hot pink and cool mint, the walls are no match for your saturated taste! If you go for vibrant color on the walls though, take note from the inspiration image and tone down the furnishings with monochromatic white and amp up the accessories with oversized, blown out patterns.

P.S. If you haven’t given your 2 cents, my (quick 4-question) reader survey is STILL open – click here for access!

Happy 2 Year Blogiversary, Dream Green DIY!!

Whenever I use the phrase “blogiversary” around my husband, he replies with a simple “I’m going to pretend that I didn’t hear you say that.” Haters gonna hate though, because we know just how special these annual celebrations are. For us, these blogs are far more than just a website or even just a place to showcase our interests, photography, writing, whatever it may be – These blogs are like babies, nurtured with SO MUCH time and energy, often for no monetary profit whatsoever. They provide us with a sense of community unlike any other, and give us a new perspective on cities, restaurants, even countries that we’ve never been to before.

That is precisely how I feel about my own blog. If I’m truly honest (and I think a lot of us can relate), there have been moments where I thought about what my life would be like without the blog – The amount of extra time I’d have is immeasurable. But really, that’s the only PRO to (hypothetically) quitting that I can come up with. The cons are numerous though: Our home wouldn’t be nearly as far in its transformation, I would no longer be able to connect with my AWESOME readers (have I mentioned how much I love you yet? No? Don’t worry, I’m getting there…) and my writing, designing and photography growth would stagnate. Where on EARTH is the fun in that? No, I’m not going anywhere, and neither is this little corner of the blogisphere.

Screen shot 2013-03-22 at 8.53.22 AM

SO. Birthday speech aside, Let’s talk about the new redesign! I had absolutely zero intention of making over the blog until, ohhhhhh, about 9:45 p.m. last night. It just suddenly hit me that I should welcome year 3 with a new face, something more stream-lined, more toned down and a little more sophisticated – DGD is 2 years old now, afterall. Time to grow up and start fitting in with the big kids.

It’s okay if you’re a little sad to see the big colorful banner fade into the past – I was a little sad too (even John fought the new look), but it didn’t take long for us to come around to the idea of that nice steely gray and turquoise. I hope you do too! You may have already picked up on my intentions here, but ultimately I was hoping to tone down the header and sidebar so that the post features could really shine. Now instead of a face full of color, you get a nice balance of monotones framing those big colorful spotlight photos. Just the thing to welcome this new year.

Speaking of this new year, it’s time to think ahead and into the wide open year 3 frontier. I have grown to really enjoy my features routine. We’ve got a pretty good thing going on every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, with random projects, reviews and thrifting adventures thrown in between, but it might be nice to change things up. Do we need to revamp these tried and true features? Do we need to CUT any? Do you want more of a certain thing? Do you want something NEW?

Reader Feedback Graphic

As you can see, I need your help to decide. I’ve put together a SUPER QUICK 4 question survey for you. I actually love taking surveys – I’m the girl who, after getting an email from a company asking for feedback, immediately clicks through and considers one mundane question after the other with the utmost seriousness. But I know not everyone feels that way. There’s obviously no pressure to take the survey – Your computer will not self destruct if you don’t click through, but as I see it this blog is really as much (if not MORE) for you then it is for me, so your feedback will only enhance YOUR experience. But still. No pressure. Click here if you want to take my reader feedback survey, or click here to see my favorite funny kitten video on YouTube – In my opinion, two stellar options for spending your next 5 minutes.

And finally, I just want to thank you guys from the bottom of my heart. Your comments, emails, connections and even your silent visits if you don’t say a WORD all mean the absolute world to me. You and this blog have transformed my life in record speed – My motivation to do the things I do is largely fueled by your tremendous support. So ::big group hug:: and let’s take this next year in stride, one project at a time…

Cheers!

What’s in a name?

Dream Green DIY. It’s not a very standard name. Some may not be drawn to it at first, while others find it instantly catchy. Either way, I wanted to sit down and get real about the reasoning and truth behind the name. It’s kind of an interesting one and I thought hearing it might help you connect a little bit better with the philosophy behind this little brand that I’ve created.

Untitled-1

So where to start? I distinctly remember when I sat down to create this blog back in March of 2011. I had major plans for a site dedicated to my absolute favorite thing in the entire world: homes. I wanted to talk colors, accessories, wallpaper and gardening. My mind was filled to the brim with images to post, projects to talk about and tutorials to share. As I clicked through the prompts to set up my brand new WordPress blog, all of this was racing through my conscience at a million miles per second.

Then it all came crashing to a halt.

Screen shot 2013-01-29 at 4.56.51 PM

Uhhhhhhhh….

I paused for a moment (imagine my once perky back slumping in my chair with uncertainty), and racked my brain for the right name for my soon-to-be site. After closing my eyes, stretching my fingers over the keyboard and visualizing the possibilities, just one simple phrase came to mind…”Dream Green.”

Only a few people know, but there’s this house…It’s actually in the neighborhood I moved into when John and I got engaged, which still blows me away. Oh, how funny fate is…But anyway, this house has always been my dream house. Imagine the perfect green color with a gorgeous plum-colored shaker style front door and windows with cottage detailing. There’s a front porch with my favorite sort of sloping craftsman columns lined up beneath the roofline, and a perfect little front yard full of lush green grass.

While in high school, we’d often come to this particular neighborhood to grab a cup of joe at the local coffee shop or just simply walk the picturesque house-lined sidewalks. While enjoying the latter activity one evening, we came across that special green house and I was hooked. The goofy high schooler that I was immediately latched on and dubbed it her “Dream Green.” I’m fairly certain that there’s a printed photo of it in my senior scrapbook, just going to show how much this house meant to me.

While I still don’t know the occupants of the home and I’m unsure that I would even put an offer in should it come on the market, I always make a point to gaze at it with fond memories as John and I walk past hand in hand. It’s more than a house to me. It’s the personification of my love for all things “home” and my love for the idea of something special, something that speaks to me in it’s own unique way.

So while I certainly think there are names that roll a bit sweeter off the tongue and bring to mind something peaceful and soft (Lark & Linen, Cupcakes and Cashmere and Oh Joy! come to mind) the name of this blog goes far beyond the way it sounds. It’s the literal, somewhat secretive embodiment of my own little dream to be bigger, better and ultimately to be myself. Always.

All in the details…Review and Resolutions

2012

Curve ball time. Instead of focusing my typical Thursday “All in the details…” feature on a special room today, I’ve decided to focus attention on a handful of special thoughts, reflections and resolutions. It is the first week of 2013 after all. (Speaking of, who else has written “2012″ on autopilot the last few days??)

In terms of this blog, 2012 was a whirlwind. Readership doubled, I decided to go back to daily posts instead of just 3 days a week and I FINALLY began to learn how to use a DSLR camera. There was also that moment when one totally random, frankly quite shotty project went viral on Pinterest, catapulting the blog into uncharted stats territory (for reasons I’m still scratching my head over). Said project also landed me an Apartment Therapy feature. And lastly, our home was featured on The Everygirl (as was a festive little DIY project), and I also began writing for Glitter Guide. I STILL have to pinch myself when thinking about those last two accomplishments.

All in all, I couldn’t be more excited with the current lifestyle of DG-DIY. You guys have seriously made this little corner of the Internet one of the coziest and most humbling retreats for me.

But gooshy stuff aside…Let’s talk goals. This post is already far wordier (and photo-scarce) then I had planned, so I’ll be concise. I only have 2 resolutions for the year ahead because I don’t like to be unrealistic, but I think the ones I’ve chosen are both good and valuable things to focus on – One for the emotional benefits, and the other for the financial:

  1. Be kinder: Here’s a confession…When it comes to my relationship with John, I kind of resort to the flirtation tactics of a 5th grader. In other words, I have this major crush on my hubby, like MAJOR, but I show it by teasing and taunting him. I know, I know…Not cool. Especially when he’s the gentlest, most thoughtful creature on earth. But I’d seriously do anything for the guy, so this year, I’m resolving to show my love in a kinder way. No more figuratively pushing him in the dirt and calling him a “poopy face,” all while doodling hearts and his last name in my trapper keeper…
  2. No new clothes for a year: So this one is actually super last minute. Joy Cho (of Oh Joy!) made a shout out on Twitter yesterday to someone who did just that in 2012, and it intrigued me. I immediately asked myself mentally if I too could achieve such a bragging right, and the thought wasn’t all that crazy! So I’m going to try my DAMNEDEST not to buy clothes for an entire year, that’s 365 whole days. I AM allowing myself 2 exceptions though. Gifted clothes are a-okay (hint hint family members) and I’m also going to give myself 3 “Get Out Of Jail Free” cards to go shopping for EMERGENCIES ONLY. Wish me luck…I think I’ll need it.

Thanks for a FABULOUS 2012, and I’d love to know – What resolutions are you guys coming up with for the new year?

“It Started With Yum” Blogging Exchange: DIY Holiday Bunting Flags

This past weekend, I had the enormous pleasure of visiting with Jessalyn, blogger extraordinaire behind It Started With Yum. If you missed our first blogging exchange back in August, click here to get the low down. Long story short, Jessalyn and I actually knew each other waaaaay back in high school and have since reconnected post-grad through our blogs. Now only living an hour away, she and I have made a pact to connect each season to bounce ideas off of one another and just generally exploit our general love for all things DIY.

2012-12-09_1848

This latest trip’s objective was actually based off of a comment Jessalyn made after I posted a tutorial for one of our many DIY wedding projects – This particular one involved transforming scrapbook paper into bunting flags using twine and hot glue. After scrolling through the post, Jessalyn suggested a Christmas version using a collection of holiday cards. I jumped right on board with the idea and waited impatiently for December to roll around so we could test it out.

IMG_7225

The process was pretty simple – Start by gathering old Christmas cards and cutting the front cover off. Then, flip the card cover over and trace a triangular flag shape on the back – Use this first one as your tracing template to cut out the rest of the flags.

Once all of the cards are cut to shape, flip each one over in turn and squeeze a line of hot glue on the back towards the top, then settle twine into the still hot glue. Allowing for about an inch of room between each flag, continue the process until you’ve moved your way through the entire pile of paper flags. For the first and last flags, leave about six inches of twine off each end.

Once finished, cut the twine (again, six inches from the end) and allow the glue to dry for about ten minutes.

IMG_7235

(For more photos of this process, click over to the original post for our wedding bunting flag)

Now for the fun part: Hanging the finished flags up! We played around with several different locations around the house – from the wooden valance John and I made in the living room, to the entryway table. We even wrapped them around our Christmas tree as garland.

IMG_7245

IMG_7246

IMG_7251

IMG_7303

Then we moved into the kitchen, where we decided to drape my shorter strand above the chalkboard calendar. I immediately felt like this spot seemed “just right,” but then we decided to beef up the look a bit by draping Jessalyn’s much longer strand (guess she’s been collecting longer than I have!) right underneath. I was in love.

IMG_7319

IMG_7317

IMG_7336

In the end, I had a blast making this project and love just how versatile it is in terms of display – I can’t wait to start collecting cards more actively and adding to my banner as time goes on. What a great way to honor the people we love (and the SEASON that we love too!).
.
But the Christmas card project possibilities don’t stop there! Ohhhh no…Before saying our “goodbyes,” Jessalyn and I couldn’t help but brainstorm a few other thoughts. Try these on for size:
.
  • Experiment with proportion: Try cutting your Christmas cards into different sized triangles for various spots in your home – For example, cut them into teeny tiny triangles for draping on the front of a shelf, or cut them into oversized triangles for places like a balcony railing seen from afar.
  • Experiment with shape: Why not take it beyond triangles altogether?! Cut your cards into circles, squares or beveled bunting like this.
  • Experiment with letters: Finally, consider cutting your Christmas cards into the shape of your initials or spell out a festive holiday word (like “Ho Ho Ho” or “Joy”) – These could be glued to twine like we did, or even used as fun DIY gift tags (ala yesterday’s post).

Now. Are you ready for a little BONUS time!!! For 3 more ideas, click over to Jessalyn’s companion post right here – She’s sharing a few extra bullet points that I know you’ll want to check out.

As always, thanks to Jessalyn for a great afternoon of creative crafting and chatting – It’s my new favorite cure for seasonal burn out…

What do you guys do with YOUR Christmas cards?

P.S. Jessalyn sent over a bunch of her own photos (the one above being part of her lovely stack!) and, although we took mostly the same images, I just HAD to share this portrait she took of Rocky…Isn’t he just the sweetest?? She captured him perfectly.

Why I am a die-hard WordPress fan

Okay, my blogging readers – Let’s talk shop. The (friendly) battle between Blogger and WordPress has been raging for years, and writers have been choosing sides for just as long. As a disclaimer, I can only speak from experience with WordPress since I have yet to play around with Blogger. I don’t know that I could ever pinpoint the initial reason for deciding to go with WordPress over Blogger – I think it had something to do with the fact that it was the most used platform of my favorite sites.

But I got to thinking more intentionally about the reason after getting a message from my friend Megan, of The Mego Blog, who is looking to make the switch to WordPress and wanted some advice. Before shooting her a HUGELY wordy reply with numbered screen shots attached, I thought I’d go ahead and share my thoughts with everyone here. I know when I’m considering taking the plunge with something new, the more reviews I get beforehand the better. I like to actually SEE how someone if using the product and the results they are getting. Well, if you are a regular follower, you’ve seen the results I’ve gotten from working with WordPress, but I’m going to share today have I USE the product to get the look and feel of Dream Green DIY.

As I said, I’m a WordPress blogger through and through, but that in NO WAY means that I devalue Blogger as a platform. I welcome your Blogger thoughts in the comments of this post – Maybe you have some tips for Megan to make the most of her blog there before she makes a final decision on the switch.

But let’s get to it…

Since I’m not sure of your general familiarity with WordPress, I’m going to pretend that you are like Megan and have never used it before. So, to start let me explain the general makeup.

Annnnnnd since you can’t see that AT ALL, here’s a close-up of the interesting part on the left:

The dashboard is essentially your “home page,” where you get a very broad overview of your blog (P.S. You’re going to get a TON of inside info on the stats of DG-DIY in this post!!). You’ll see a variety of numbers, like your number of posts, number of comments, number of categories/tags/spam, etc. P.S. Thank God for Akismet, which has saved me from dealing with over 6,000 spam comments…You’ll also see a smattering of your most recent comments, both yours and your readers’.

While we have that close-up above, take a look at the list on the left – These are all of the different “departments” in the management of your blog. We’ve got posts, pages, comments, links (where you manage your Blogroll), appearance, settings, etc. So let’s say we click on one…Let’s check out the Site Stats (which is actually a small subset on the list beneath your “Dashboard” header).

And once again, since you can’t see that…here’s a detail screen shot:

This is where I park my internet explorer everyday. It’s where I keep track of referrals (you’ll see that search engines and Pinterest were my top referrers for the day), views for the day (looks like I got up to 428 as of the time I took this screen shot - mid-afternoon on Wednesday), and my all-time views. I know a lot of blogs get 265,600 views in one day, but I still jump for joy seeing all of those digits after only a year and a half of blogging. That handy graph you see is AWESOME for watching the trends in view stats. You can even switch it to show the graph by week or by month just by clicking on those tabs in the upper left corner under “At A Glance.”

Moving on, let’s check out the “Posts” tab:

Here’s a close-up of the left side of that screen shot:

And now the right:

So this is where all of your posts are organized. On the first close-up screen shot, you’ll see the titles of all your posts, whether they are pending or published (we’ll get to that in a minute) and who the author is. You’ll see up at the top that you can toggle between your published posts, scheduled posts, drafts and trash if you want to filter them in a specific way.

Now in that right hand close-up screen shot, you can see that the main “Posts” page will also show you the different categories and tags each post is marked with, how many comments have been made, the number of “likes” and also when a post was published, modified or scheduled.

Moving on to another important section in WordPress, we have the “Pages” section. I’m not going to get too into it because (1) it’s pretty self explanatory and (2) it’s very similar to how you manage posts. Here are a couple details though just to give you a glimpse:

Next up, let’s talk about comments. I love the way that I am able to manage comments in WordPress. Before taking these screen shots, I went ahead and unapproved one of my own comments so you can see what it would look like if you were to receive a new comment.

When you get a new comment, you’ll see a little round number pop up beside the “Comments” tab on the left hand list (you’ll see this no matter what part of WordPress you’re on – “Posts,” “Pages,” “Appearance,” etc.). Click over to “Comments” and you’ll see the new comment highlighted in yellow. You can then choose to “Approve” it, “Reply,” “Trash” it, etc. as seen below the comment text. My heart always does somersaults of joy when I see a new thought pop up from one of you guys…Keep ‘em coming!

Moving on, let’s take a look at the “Appearance” tab, specifically the “Widgets.”

This is where I go to edit and work on my sidebar widgets. When you click over to “Appearance,” you can then click on the subsection for “Widgets” where you will automatically see a big list of things to add to your sidebars (as seen in the detail above).

Say you want to add text, for instance. All you do is click and hold over the “Text” item in the master list (again, as seen above in the lower right hand corner) and then literally drag it over to to the right into your sidebar, as seen below:

When you drag that “Text” item over, a dashed box will appear showing you where the new widget will show up (in this hypothetical case, it’s going between my “Follow Blog” and another “Text” widget. Once it’s placed, you can customize it with titles, words, images, etc. I use text widgets a lot in order to incorporate some of my custom linkable graphics, but that’s an entirely separate story/post…

Moving on to the last piece of the puzzle, let’s check out another subsection beneath “Appearance” – That is, your “Header.”

This is where you upload a custom header, which in my opinion is one of the most important pieces to a blog. It’s where you are able to get really creative graphically and set your blog apart from the crowd. My current header is seen in the big “Preview” at the top of the page, but if you look down you’ll see that my past headers are also still available. If I wanted to reserect an old one, all I need to do is click on the circle beside the image and then click “Save Changes.” Or I can upload a brand NEW one by clicking “Choose File” and “Upload.” The great thing is that this page will show you the dimensions to work with if you are making a custom header. As you can see in the close-up below, mine is 960 × 240 pixels:

So there you have it! The most concise introduction to WordPress that I could manage in less than 1,500 words! Oh, speaking of word count, here’s a screen shot of what it looks like to actually DRAFT a post (again, that overview would require an entirely separate post). The word count shows up conveniently at the end of your post.

I hope that isn’t TOO confusing for any newbies! It’s always a little daunting to learn a new software or system, but trust me when I say that WordPress is just about as user-friendly as they come. I for one have no intentions of switching away any time soon.

If you have any questions or are interested in more detailed WordPress tutorials (although I am no way an expert), leave a comment on this post or shoot me an email at DreamGreenDIY@gmail.com. And again, any Blogger users out there, please feel free to tell us why you love Blogger! I don’t think that there is a right or wrong answer in this debate…

Enjoy the weekend and the OFFICIAL start to fall!

“It Started With Yum” Blogging Exchange: Green Cleaning

To all my blog-managing readers out there: Don’t you just ADORE the blogging community? So much inspiration, so much creativity, so much UNDERSTANDING. Earlier this year, I was struggling with a lack of close female companionship in my life, but over the last several months (namely since my Everygirl feature) I’ve managed to make so many new blog friends. While most of these friendships have been cultivated virally via email and/or social media exchanges, I’ve been so touched by the sincerity of them. To shout out to some of them – Anne of Anne the Adventurer, Candie of Craftbaby and some really fun comment/twitter exchanges with Caroline of Between Your Ears and Joelle of A Charming Occasion. One exception to these viral blogging friendships however, is my recent reconnection with Jessalyn, the blogger behind It Started With Yum.

Via

Jessalyn and I have actually known each other for over a decade, starting back in high school (or was it even middle school?). The point is, we’ve known each other for a very long time. But, aside from a few shared friends, we were never really all that close. Fast forward to adulthood and, like people often do, we grew into two newly-shaped women with a LOT in common – One thing being our blogs.

Oh, and this is Jessalyn – Put a face to the name!

After reading a rather sentimental and raw post of mine on blogging over at ReadBreathe.com, Jessalyn was touched and contacted me with a proposition – A service swap, if you will. A chance for us to teach each other a little piece of our blogging niches and then collaboratively posting about our adventures.

You don’t have to ask me twice!

You guys know all about my own personal blogging niche. As for Jessalyn, she’s a very talented cook and gardener who uses her site to share her adventures in the kitchen (and beyond). For our first swap, she agreed to show me how she cleans her home using household resources and natural products, while I promised to show her how to style her kitchen shelves. From the moment I knocked on her freshly painted mint green door (amazingly inspired by our very own mint studio!), we had a fabulous time catching up, exchanging expertise and later, touring some of her town’s best thrifting (to be expanded on in its own post on Friday).

When it came time for Jessalyn’s “Green Cleaning” tutorial, I parked myself on her kitchen stool and got to note-taking. Her ideas were so SIMPLE and something I wish I had been doing for years. I’ve since rattled off all of my new tips to anyone who will listen, and now that person is you! So pull up a chair and let’s get down to business…

Supplies:

  1. Baking soda
  2. Vinegar
  3. Empty spray bottle (for homemade solution)
  4. Shaker (for baking soda)
  5. Castile soap
  6. Lemons (not pictured as we used those bad boys right up)

All purpose cleaning spray

This all-in-one spray made of water and vinegar cleans anything from kitchen counter tops (although, I was told to avoid granite) to the bath tub. All it takes is a combination of equal parts water and vinegar in any empty or recycled spray bottle you have on hand. Jessalyn offered this tip if the smell of vinegar isn’t your cup of tea: Soak orange peels in the vinegar for a bit before making the solution. When using the spray, the hint of orange scent will mask the vinegar – Although, apparently the vinegar scent dissipates once the cleaning solution evaporates anyway. EXTRA TIP: When cleaning the toilet bowl, disinfect to the max with straight vinegar, stored in a generic condiment squirt bottle.

Baking soda

Jessalyn keeps a little shaker (sort of like the ones you see at coffee shops containing cocoa or sugar) full of baking soda on the kitchen window sill. When the sink needs cleaning, she wets the sink down and then coats the surface with a few scattered shakes of the powder. Let it sit for a few minutes and then return to wipe it down. BONUS: This is where you can use a halved lemon (or even just the empty peel) to further bleach and disinfect the sink, simply by rubbing it over the already-rubbed-in baking soda. Rinse, and you’re all done!

Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Soap

Coming in all sorts of different scents (Jessalyn’s was peppermint), this de-greasing liquid soap works wonders on cooktop surfaces. Jessalyn demonstrated by squirting a bit in several sections of the cooktop and then shaking baking soda from that same little shaker on top. Swirl it together and then work it into the problem areas with a rag, and watch the white powder turn brown – This is when you know it’s working…Wipe it up with a wet towel and then a dry one. This combo works with any greasy issues you have around the house.

And that’s it! Isn’t that amazing?? I can’t tell you how much money I’ve wasted on harsh chemicals to clean our house, thinking that green DIY products made from natural resources was too hands-on and time-intensive. Turns out it super easy and super inexpensive. As John and I use up the chemical cleaners we have on hand, I will definitely be replacing them with Jessalyn’s suggestions.

Now, I invite you to head over to It Started With Yum to see what I was able to contribute to our blogging exchange! Click here for a run down on how we styled Jessalyn’s DIY open shelving (a tutorial about how said shelves were constructed can be found here). Pssst…Here’s a sneak peek:

Thanks, Jessalyn for this fabulous idea and I’m so thankful to have a new friend in you. Looking forward to more adventures to come!

I (somehow) managed to snag a Craftbaby sponsor win!

So truth be told (although I feel like I can’t possibly be the only one…), I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I’ve won something. I still hold my breath in excitement every time I enter my name into a contest, may it be for a week’s worth of free joe from our local coffee shop, or something incredible like the spectacular giveaway hosted by Young House Love recently. No matter the contest, no matter the prize, I STILL get goosebumps imagining an unlikely win.

This to say that, the four or five times I’ve actually won ALL happened when I least expected it.

It’s kind of like the radio for me. I swear to you, every time I think how nice it would be to hear my favorite song without actually thinking it’s going to happen, it does. Like clockwork. It’s the same for me with contests – Only very rarely do I slip my name into the pile with no ACTUAL hope of winning.

Yet, that was precisely my attitude when entering myself into Craftbaby’s “Fabulous Frames” sweepstakes – Lo and behold, soon after submitting my framed Polaroid clothesline project into the mix on the site, I got an email telling me that I was the Sponsor’s winner!

Here’s my photo of the completed project, which involved an old frame spray painted a happy yellow, some simple twine and clothespins and my favorite Polaroid photos.

But it turns out that winning Sponsor’s choice wasn’t the only surprise I got – I also was given a gift card to the Etsy shop of Candie, one of the creative ladies behind Craftbaby. I had so much fun clicking through her fun products – It was hard to choose, but I finally asked for her “You Are the Match to My Flame” print. I am really into typography prints lately, and was so pleased to add one to my collection.

After thinking long and hard on where to hang it, I ended up slipping it behind glass in my studio – I was never really sold on the artwork in the two ribba frames hung on my black wall, so switching out the boring scrapbook paper for my new print was just logical. Since the opening in the frame was for an 8×10 and the print is a 5×7, I mounted it onto a piece of metallic paper to better fill the space. The extra bit of pattern gives it just a TOUCH of oomph, and the gold and brass sheen offers so much texture.

Although I L-O-V-E my bright, happy new prize print, I’m not feeling two typographies right next to one another. I’ll be finding a replacement for the one on the left asap – Any suggestions? I’m looking for something pictoral this time.

This whole experience and winning a fabulous prize was enough, truly, to make this girl’s year. But aside from that, I was able to make another fantastic blogging friend in Candie – She was an absolute DREAM to work with (even despite a mailing snafoo that I’m sad to say forced her to send me a second print when the first never made it…I HATE when sellers have to do that…). But even beyond that, her colorful, creative personality shines through in all of the communication we’ve had – The hand-written note I received with my print was so heartwarming and something that I know I’ll be holding on to for posterity.

I highly recommend her work to all of you…

Thanks, Candie (and Liz too!!) for appreciating my work and what I do…The feeling is absolutely mutual!!!

Happy one year, DreamGreenDIY!

Well, it’s official. DreamGreenDIY turned one year old yesterday! It has been an incredibly exciting year, what with an engagement, new jobs, new diets and new friends – Not to mention a new passion born from this blog.

I started DreamGreenDIY as a way to document the changes of our home and also as a way to share my daily interior design inspiration. I didn’t really have any major goals when it came to the blog, but now one year later I can safely say that I love doing it. You can read up all about the readership, my guest blogging and general stats in this post from the beginning of the year, but I always want (and need) to give a big shoutout to YOU, my readers. DG-DIY would be a complete flop if it weren’t for the continued support and suggestions offered by all of you. So thank you thank you THANK YOU!!!

As I enter into my second year as a crafting/nesting blogger, I plan on implementing a few changes. But since this blog is just as much for me as it is for you, I wanted to get some outside opinion and insight. I invite you to share your honest thoughts by taking part in the polls below (and, of course, in the comments section) as I let DG-DIY evolve into a brighter and more helpful blog.

As for definite changes, I am creating a new feature (probably on a random schedule) that will be image-based. Sometimes I feel like I could type and type and type about something that inspires me, but not really get the feeling across. But we all know that photos speak their own language, one that I think is sometimes more effective.

When I was in school studying art, I loved to make collages – Splattering paint and water all over a big canvas and then pasting on pieces of patterned tissue and watercolor paper. It was so organic and I loved the color scheme that would emerge without intention. I’d like to try to recreate that sort of mismatched collage with images of homes, rooms, colors and patterns that inspire me. Stick around for that!

Check out my artist’s website here if you’re curious about that side of my life.

One last change – And this one is actually a bit of a doozy…

When I started DreamGreenDIY one year ago, I went into it thinking that John would be a major part of the blog. I even has the idea that he’d write a post or two. But that just didn’t end up being the case…It has become clear that the blog is my baby. While John is still just as much a part of the background, behind-the-scenes stuff, I’ve decided to take full ownership of the blog in general. If you haven’t already noticed, you’ll see this shift in the “About” page and in the home page photo. But all of you on “Team John,” don’t worry – He’ll always show up in post photos and stories. While we didn’t end up sharing blogging responsibilities, we still very much share a life together – Duh! :)

Thank you in advance for your feedback and thanks again for making this blog the success that it is. Here’s to an even bigger and better year number two!!!
